# Share of Voice

> How Ranqo calculates Share of Voice, which competitors count toward it, and how it differs from Visibility.

Share of Voice answers one question: of all the times AI named a brand in your category, how often was it yours?

> **Share of Voice:** Of every brand mention AI made, the share that was yours.

## The formula

Share of Voice divides your mentions by every qualified mention in the same answers:

```text
Share of Voice = (your mentions) / (your mentions + qualified competitor mentions)
```

Calculated across your engines together.

A competitor's mentions count only when it qualifies; see [Which competitors count](#which-competitors-count). Share of Voice is calculated over the answers in the window you are looking at, across the engines your filters include. Every page computes it with the same function and the same rule for which competitors count, so the same answers always give the same share. Two pages still show different figures when they read different answers:

- **Home** reads the last 30 days, whatever range you pick on other pages.
- **The Competitors page** reads **Last 365 days** as the last 90 days. See [Time zones](https://ranqo.ai/docs/methodology/time-zones#how-each-page-reads-a-date-range).
- **A run in [Snapshots](https://ranqo.ai/docs/guides/snapshots)** reads that one run and counts answers reused after a failed query. The Visibility and Competitors pages and Home leave reused answers out. See [When a query fails](https://ranqo.ai/docs/methodology#when-a-query-fails).

## Which competitors count

AI answers name a lot of brands, and some of them are noise: a name mentioned once, with no website, that nobody has heard of. Counting those would shrink every real brand's share. A competitor counts toward the denominator when any of these is true:

- You track it on your watchlist.
- AI named it more than once in the window.
- AI gave a website for it that exists and matches its name.

A competitor that fails all three still appears in the raw answers, it just does not dilute your share.

## A worked example

Say one run collects 40 answers. Your brand is named 12 times. Three competitors are named 20, 10 and 6 times, and one brand is named once with no website.

- The one-off brand does not qualify, so the denominator is 12 + 20 + 10 + 6 = 48.
- Your Share of Voice is 12 / 48 = 25%.

Counting the one-off name would have made it 12 / 49, which rounds to 24.5%. Small here, but across a long tail of one-off names the difference adds up.

## Visibility and Share of Voice are different

Visibility is the share of AI answers that name you at all. Share of Voice is your slice of all the brand mentions in those answers. A brand can be mentioned in most answers (high visibility) while competitors are mentioned more often in the same answers (lower Share of Voice). Read the two together. See [Visibility](https://ranqo.ai/docs/methodology/visibility).

## Where you see it

- **Visibility page:** the Share of Voice card, and the ring with a slice for each competitor you choose and the rest grouped as **Others**.
- **Competitors page:** the Share of Voice card, the **SoV** column of the Overview table, a competitor's detail, and your share beside a rival's in Head-to-head.
- **Home:** the Share of Voice figure on the scoreboard, over the last 30 days.
- **Snapshots:** each run's own Share of Voice.
- **Export PDF** on the Visibility page: the page's figure, for the range and filters you set.
