We surveyed fifteen of the highest- ranking ones before writing this. Every single one repeats some version of the same three points. On Perplexity, more sources are cited per response than on any other major platform. Practically, that means the "cost of being included" is lower than on ChatGPT or Claude -- there are simply more slots. But it also means the cost of being excluded is higher: if your competitors are getting cited and you aren't, the gap compounds because users see five or ten of them in every answer instead of two.

Most articles on this topic say "post on Reddit" and stop. That is the wrong instruction. Perplexity isn't citing Reddit because Reddit posts are well-formatted; it's citing Reddit because Reddit threads contain real users answering specific questions with lived-experience detail that the model can quote. Brands that post promotional content directly on Reddit usually get downvoted, removed, or simply ignored by the very threads Perplexity later cites.
The honest version of the play is closer to earned-media than content marketing:

For optimization purposes, the tier that matters most is sonar-pro -- it's the default for Perplexity's consumer product and most customer-facing API integrations. If your content can't earn citations there, it won't earn them on the cheaper or more-reasoning-heavy tiers either.

Common Perplexity-Specific Mistakes
- Treating Perplexity like Google, but smaller. Perplexity is not a smaller Google. It has its own index, its own model behavior, and its own source preferences. Inheriting Google rankings is not a citation strategy.
