Reddit and Forums Out-Cite Your Entire Website

Reddit and community forums are 3.3% of citations in our published study. That sounds small until you see what it sits next to. A brand's entire own website is 2.9%. Forums also outrank Wikipedia and software review sites. Video still leads overall, and the honest read is that the sources shaping how AI describes you are places other people publish.

When AI answers a question about your category, part of what it repeats was written by strangers on a forum. In our published study (arXiv:2606.20065), Reddit and community forums account for 3.3% of citations. The study measures them as one class, with Reddit as the name on it.

Three per cent sounds like a rounding error, and most teams treat it as one. It is the reason a lot of AI visibility work goes into pages that were never going to be cited. What the number means only becomes clear once you see what sits next to it.

It Beats Your Entire Website

In the same study, measured the same way, a brand's own domain accounts for 2.9% of the citations behind answers about that brand. Reddit and community forums come to 3.3%.

Every page you have ever written, every product page, every pillar post, the whole site you control and can edit this afternoon, is cited less often than a site you cannot edit at all. That is the number worth sitting with, and it reframes what 3.3% means. It is not a small slice of the pie. It is more than everything you own.

Forums out-cite everything you own

Share of 149,912 citations by source class. Corporate pages owned by other companies are excluded here at 75.2%, because on one axis they flatten everything else.

Software review sites are the one most teams get wrong. Review profiles feel like the obvious place to be cited from, and they are worth having, but at 1.1% they are roughly a third of what forums contribute.

Video Still Leads, and That Matters

Forums lead nothing overall. Among everything that is not a corporate page, video comes first: YouTube is 4.2%. Forums sit fourth, behind video, tech and business media, and a long tail of other sites, the last two tied at 3.8%.

Worth saying plainly, because the useful version of this finding is not "go all in on Reddit." It is that the sources deciding how AI describes you are places other people publish, and two of the biggest are a forum and a video platform. Neither is on your content calendar.

Why Reddit and Not the Other Forums

Plenty of communities have the same conversations. Most of them are invisible to a model. Discord and Slack are closed, so nothing said there can be cited by anything. Facebook groups are effectively walled. Vendor community boards are indexed but read as marketing, because they are.

Reddit is open, indexed, and organised as a question with answers underneath it, which happens to be the exact shape of what an assistant is trying to produce. A thread also keeps its URL for years, so a good answer written in 2023 is still sitting there being cited today. That combination is rare, and it is most of why one forum shows up where dozens do not.

The Average Hides a Wide Range

3.3% is the figure across the whole study, and no single brand is the whole study. Looking across the brands we track, some categories run well above 15%, including travel, sports technology, consumer software, luxury fashion and digital marketplaces.

At that level Reddit stops being a channel worth noting and becomes the main thing describing you. In those categories it runs at least 10× the citations a brand's own website gets, and in one of them the gap is far wider still. A team in that position could rewrite every page they own tomorrow and barely move what AI says about them.

That is a different measurement from the study above, on a different set of brands, so treat it as the shape rather than a precise second figure. The shape is the useful part. Reddit is close to binary: it is either a serious share of how AI describes you, or it is nothing at all, and which one is mostly decided before you do anything about it.

What separates the two ends is whether people discuss the product in public by choice. Consumer and enthusiast categories draw heavy forum discussion. Plenty of enterprise software draws almost none, because the committee that chose it does not post about it and the people using it did not pick it. Neither is a failure of marketing.

Check It for Your Own Category

None of that decides your own category. Four steps settle it:

  • 01Write ten questions a buyer would ask before they know you exist. Unbranded ones, naming a problem rather than a company.
  • 02Run each one more than once, on different days. Answers move between identical runs, so a single check is a coin flip.
  • 03Record every cited URL, not just whether you appeared. The URLs are the finding; the mention is the headline.
  • 04Count what share are forums. Well above 3.3% and it belongs in your plan. Near zero and it does not, whatever the average says.

Off-Site GEO: A Playbook for the 97% of AI Citations You Don't Control

Only 2.9% of AI citations point to your own domain, so 97% of your AI visibility lives on pages you don't control. The usual advice, get mentioned everywhere, is a checklist, not a plan: the six off-site surfaces differ 20x in payoff and 10x in effort. Off-site GEO sequences them by leverage, share times winnability times durability. Here's the playbook, with data from 149,912 citations.
