Reddit Is the #1 Domain ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini Cite
Our study puts Reddit and forums at 3.3% of AI citations across five engines. That average hides the useful fact. On the latest runs we asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same 415 questions side by side: Reddit is 17.5% of ChatGPT's citations, 7.7% of Perplexity's and 3.0% of Gemini's. Which engine your buyers use decides whether Reddit is a lever or a rounding error.
Reddit is the single most-cited domain on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. How much that matters to you depends almost entirely on which of the three your buyers actually use.
These are the latest runs, not a historical average: 7 weeks of tracking ending 2026-08-22, on the current generation of web-search models. We put 415 questions to all three engines inside the same tracking run, so the only thing that changed between answers was the engine. Reddit came to 17.5% of ChatGPT's citations, 7.7% of Perplexity's, and 3% of Gemini's. That is a 5.8× spread on identical questions asked at the same moment.
The practical read: a Reddit strategy is close to the highest-leverage off-site work available to a brand whose buyers ask ChatGPT, and close to a rounding error for one whose buyers ask Gemini. The same effort, the same brand, two different answers.
What We Measured
415 questions, each answered by all three engines in the same run. That is 1,245 answers carrying 14,979 citations between 2026-07-06 and 2026-08-22. Citations are counted one row per cited link, not per unique page.
The matched design is doing real work here. Answers move between identical runs, so comparing an engine checked on Tuesday against one checked on Friday measures the calendar as much as the engine. Asking all three the same question in the same run removes that.
The window starts in July for a reason worth being blunt about. Our platform moved to the current generation of web-search models in late June and early July, and the corpus before that cutover is measuring retired models rather than the ones your buyers are using. It is not a subtle effect. Stretch the window to sixty days and it pulls in a period where nearly a quarter of ChatGPT answers returned no citations at all, which drags Gemini's Reddit share up to more than double its true value. A longer window would have given us four times as much data and a worse answer.
The Split
Reddit's share of citations, by engine
The same 415 questions answered by all three engines in the same tracking run: 1,245 answers carrying 14,979 citations, 2026-07-06 to 2026-08-22.
- ChatGPT
- 17.5% · 13.3-23.2%
- Perplexity
- 7.7% · 5.2-11.2%
- Gemini
- 3% · 1.1-4.1%
The range under each figure is the middle half (25th to 75th percentile). The three ranges do not overlap anywhere.
On ChatGPT, Reddit is not just the leading domain, it is 6.3× the size of the runner-up. techradar.com is second at 2.8%. Nothing else is close, and no other engine in the set has a first-place domain that dominant.
The obvious objection is that a few Reddit-heavy outliers are carrying the average. They are not. Taken one tracked site at a time, the middle half sits between 13.3% and 23.2% on ChatGPT, between 5.2% and 11.2% on Perplexity, and between 1.1% and 4.1% on Gemini. Those three ranges do not overlap anywhere. This is the whole distribution moving, not a few outliers pulling a mean.
The reach is broad too. ChatGPT put a Reddit link in 265 of 415 answers, Perplexity in 179 and Gemini in 102. That holds across categories as unrelated as luxury fashion, last-mile logistics, wealth management and stock-market education.
So the difference between the engines is not whether Reddit is in the pool, because it is in all three. The difference is how much room it gets once it is there.
Two Ways to Count, and Why They Disagree
Share of citations is not the same question as how often Reddit turns up at all, and the two can point in different directions. The reason is that engines are not handing out the same number of slots.
Two ways to count the same thing
Reddit's share of an engine's citations, next to the share of its answers carrying at least one Reddit link. The gap between the pair is a function of how many citations the engine returns.
- ChatGPT
- 63.9% of answers · 7.4 cites/answer
- Perplexity
- 43.1% of answers · 13.5 cites/answer
- Gemini
- 24.6% of answers · 15.2 cites/answer
An engine returning more citations per answer dilutes every single source in the list, which is why Gemini can cite Reddit in 24.6% of answers and still have it at 3% of citations.
Gemini returns 15.2 citations per answer against ChatGPT's 7.4. So Gemini can cite Reddit in 24.6% of its answers and still leave it at 3% of citations: present often, rarely load-bearing. ChatGPT cites Reddit in 63.9% of answers and gives it 17.5% of a much shorter list.
Which number you should care about depends on what you are trying to do. If the goal is to be in the room when a buyer asks, answer presence is the one to watch. If the goal is to influence what the answer actually says, share of citations is closer to the truth, because a source competing with six others has more pull than one competing with fifteen.
Why One Engine Leans So Much Harder
The tempting explanation is a content licensing deal. It does not survive the data: the engine with the best-known Reddit arrangement is the one citing it least here. A better explanation is sitting in the same corpus, and it is structural.
How many domains it takes to reach half an engine's citations
Counted over the same matched set. A lower bar means a narrower citation pool, and a narrow pool has to lean harder on its biggest node.
- ChatGPT
- 147 of 1,407
- Perplexity
- 330 of 2,639
- Gemini
- 521 of 3,271
Unique domains cited in total: ChatGPT 1,407, Perplexity 2,639, Gemini 3,271.
It takes 147 domains to account for half of ChatGPT's citations, and 521 to account for half of Gemini's. One engine is drawing from a pool roughly 3.5× narrower than the other, and a narrow pool has to lean on its biggest node.
This is the same citation pool behaviour we have written about before, seen from a different angle. Engines converge on a small set of sources they treat as reliable for a category. Reddit is in every one of those sets. It just occupies far more of the narrow ones.
There Is No Generic Reddit Strategy
The 1,161 Reddit citations in this set point at 382 different subreddits. The most-cited single community accounts for 5.5% of them, the average subreddit is cited 3 times, and the median one is cited once.
Nearly all of that tail is category-specific. A small handful of broad business subreddits recur across categories, and everything else is a community that matters enormously in one niche and not at all outside it.
That is the part that makes "invest in Reddit" a useless instruction on its own. There is no list of big subreddits to go and win. The communities deciding your category are probably ones a competitor has never heard of either, and the only way to know which they are is to read the URLs behind answers about you.
How This Squares With Our Published 3.3%
Our published study (arXiv:2606.20065) puts Reddit and community forums at 3.3% of citations, and we wrote about what that means in an earlier post on forums out-citing your own website. A reader landing on both is owed an explanation of why one says three per cent and the other says 17.5%.
Three reasons, and none of them is that either number is wrong. The study pools all 5 engines into one average, including two that cite Reddit at almost zero, so it is reporting the middle of a range this post is deliberately pulling apart. It measures Reddit and forums as a source class over 102 brands and 149,912 citations, where this measures the reddit.com domain over a much smaller and more recent set. And the study spans an earlier model generation.
They are two different measurements, and they should be read that way rather than averaged. The study is the wide, published, peer-reviewable baseline. This is a narrow, current, matched read on how far the engines have diverged from that baseline. The honest summary is that the average was always hiding the more useful fact.
What to Do With This
The instruction that follows from a 5.8× spread is not "go do Reddit". It is to find out which engine decides your category before you spend anything.
- 01Establish which engine your buyers actually use. Every number in this post is a reason not to average across them, and it is the one input that changes the answer most.
- 02Record the cited URLs, not just whether you were mentioned. A mention tells you the score; the URLs tell you which page won and where to go next.
- 03Split the count by engine. A blended source mix averages away the exact difference you are trying to act on.
- 04If Reddit is carrying your category, treat the threads that already rank as the asset. There is a platform-specific playbook for the engine leaning on it hardest.
See which sources your category runs on
Ranqo tracks the same prompt across engines and records every cited URL behind every answer, broken out by engine rather than blended. The free checker runs unbranded prompts from your category against ChatGPT live and shows the sources behind each answer. No signup.

Reddit and Forums Out-Cite Your Entire Website
Reddit and community forums are 3.3% of citations in our published study. That sounds small until you see what it sits next to. A brand's entire own website is 2.9%. Forums also outrank Wikipedia and software review sites. Video still leads overall, and the honest read is that the sources shaping how AI describes you are places other people publish.
The Citation Pool: Why AI Cites the Same 200 Sources (And How to Become One)
AI platforms don't search the entire internet. They cite from a small pool of ~200 sources per vertical. We analyzed 100M+ citations to map what a citation pool looks like, how sources get into it, and how to break in.
How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: The Two-ChatGPTs Playbook
There are two ChatGPTs. The parametric model answers from a frozen training corpus; the search-grounded model fetches via Bing. 87% of SearchGPT citations match Bing's top results (Seer, Feb 2025), which means most 'ChatGPT SEO' advice is actually Bing SEO advice. This deep dive covers the two-mode duality, the three-bot crawler architecture (GPTBot vs ChatGPT-User vs OAI-SearchBot), citation conservatism (7.92 vs Perplexity's 21.87), the OpenAI licensing layer, training-cutoff timing, and the 12-question ChatGPT citation checklist.
