How Much Does GEO Cost? Software vs Agency vs Doing It Yourself
The 12 AI visibility tools on our comparison page that publish a price charge $29 to $295 a month at entry, $97 at the median. SEO projects on Clutch average $3,199 a month. Measuring by hand takes about 2 hours a week before any work gets done. This guide prices each route from sources you can check, and shows which fits what you lack.
GEO costs whatever your missing piece costs. The 12 AI visibility tools on our comparison page that publish a price, Ranqo among them, charge $29 to $295 a month at entry, with a median of $97. SEO projects reviewed on Clutch average $3,199 a month, a figure large projects pull up, and GEO is often sold inside or beside that kind of retainer. Doing it yourself costs no cash, but asking 20 questions on 3 AI engines by hand once a week, a single pass like one scheduled run of a tool, takes about 2 hours, before any of the work.
So decide by what you lack, not by the kind of vendor. If you lack measurement, buy software. If you lack hours, relationships or press, an agency is the better buy. If you have one market, a short list of questions and an SEO or content person already, start yourself: Google says its AI features need no special optimizations beyond good SEO.
The Short Answer: Buy for What You Lack
What each route costs a month
| Route | Monthly cost | What it covers | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software, entry tier | $29-$295 | Tracking on a schedule; some tiers add audits, recommendations and content | Vendors' price pages |
| Software, whole loop | $49-$295 | Track, analyze, act and create, at least in part, without a sales call | Vendors' price pages |
| SEO agency | $2,000-$20,000average $3,199 | About 21-32 hours of work at the average, at $100-$149 an hour. The usual project is smaller: under $10,000 in total | Clutch pricing guide |
| Doing it yourself | about $330 | Staff time to measure by hand, one pass a week; the work itself is extra | US median wage (BLS); our pace estimate |
Software rows cover every tool on our comparison page that publishes a price, Ranqo included. Ranqo's own plans are in the last section.
What each route is for
| If you lack | The better buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A weekly record of what AI engines say | Software | Asking the same questions on a fixed schedule is cheap for a tool and slow by hand. |
| Hours to write, fix and publish | An agency, or a hire | Software can diagnose and draft; someone still has to ship the work. |
| Lists, press and communities that mention you | An agency | Getting onto other people's pages is pitching and relationships, which is labour. |
| Coverage in several markets | An agency with software | Each market multiplies both the questions to track and the work to do. |
| Budget, with one market and an SEO person on staff | Yourself, then software | Start by hand; switch once the checks start eating the week. |
| Proof for a boss or a client | Software | A dated record of the same questions beats screenshots. |
The Price Ladder Most Articles Repeat
Search for what a GEO agency costs and the same price ladder keeps coming back, rung for rung, with the same dollar figures in article after article. The copies we traced led back to a single agency's published estimate, with no survey or method behind it that we could find. The numbers may be fair, but nobody can check them, so we don't repeat them here.
Every price in this guide has a source you can open instead: the vendors' own price pages for software, through the data behind our comparison page, Clutch's pricing guide for agencies, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for the in-house wage. The hours are our own estimates, and we show the arithmetic so you can redo it with your numbers.
Software: Cheap to Start, Hard to Compare
Of the 15 tools on our comparison page, 12 publish an entry price, Ranqo's included. They run from $29 to $295 a month, the median is $97, and 7, more than half, cost under $100. The other 3 publish no paid entry price.

The entry tier buys very different amounts
At those prices an entry tier tracks anywhere from 5 to 200 questions, as each vendor counts them, and covers 3 to 11 AI engines. A cheaper tier can watch far less, so compare what each tier covers before you compare prices. Our tools roundup names the tools, with each one's limits, and our list for small teams compares what every entry plan costs and leaves out.
Few sell the whole loop
Tracking is the cheap part. Of the 15 tools, 5 sell all four jobs (track, analyze, act, create), at least in part, without a sales call, at $49 to $295 a month; the $49 one is ours. The others lack one of the jobs, sell it only through sales, or publish no price.
What software does not do
No tool earns you a place on someone else's list, sends the pitch or decides what your product page should say. Software tells you where you stand and what to fix, and some of it drafts the fix. The fixing is still somebody's time.
Agencies: You Are Buying Hours
Clutch, which collects client reviews of agencies, puts the average monthly cost of an SEO project among agencies on its site at $3,199 and finds most charging $100 to $149 an hour. Its pricing guide adds that agencies typically charge $2,000 to $20,000 a month. Those are SEO figures. We found no traceable survey of GEO retainers, and agencies often sell GEO inside or beside SEO work, so this is the nearest honest benchmark.
Read the average as the cost of a substantial engagement, not a typical one. The same page says the usual SEO project reviewed on Clutch costs less than $10,000 in total and gives the usual timeline as 12 months, while the average project comes to $37,159. Large projects pull the averages up, so a small engagement can cost well under $3,199 a month.
What the money buys
At Clutch's most common rate, the average engagement buys about 21 to 32 hours a month. Clutch lists technical, on-page and link-building work at $25 to $49 an hour; billed entirely at that rate, the same money buys about 65 to 128 hours, and a mixed engagement lands in between. Either way, that is the case for an agency: hours of writing, technical fixes, outreach and press, plus relationships you do not have. It is a weak case if many of those hours go to checking AI answers by hand and writing them up, which software does for a fraction of the price.
When an agency is the better buy
- Nobody on your team has the hours to ship content and fixes.
- Your gap is off your site: ranked lists, reviews, press and communities, the work our off-site GEO guide covers.
- You sell in several markets or languages.
- You want one party accountable for the result.
Large marketers keep both
In Gartner's 2025 survey of 402 CMOs and other marketing leaders, mostly at companies with over $1 billion in revenue, 39% planned to cut agency budgets, and 22% said generative AI had reduced their reliance on agencies for creativity and strategy. Yet a 2023 survey by the Association of National Advertisers, with 162 respondents, found 82% had an in-house agency (up from 78% in 2018) and 92% still worked with outside ones. At large advertisers, work moves in-house and agencies keep what the team lacks the time or skills to do.
Doing It Yourself: Cheap in Cash, Not in Hours
For its own AI features, Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode". An SEO or content person who already does the basics well is most of the way there on Google. What doing it yourself really costs is measurement.
The hours
Tracking 20 questions on 3 engines means 60 answers to read and log every week, one pass per question, as in one scheduled run of a tool. We estimate 2 minutes a check (ask, wait for the answer, note whether you were named, where, and next to whom), which comes to about 2 hours a week. Any single week is a noisy reading, by hand or by tool: an overall visibility score moves 14.5 points or more between consecutive runs about one time in twenty. Software handles that by asking the same questions every week and judging change across several runs, so the cost by hand is keeping the habit going for months. Our manual-check guide goes further and asks each question 5 times per check, because chat-app answers vary between sessions; that multiplies the time by 5.
The cost
At the 2025 US median wage for market research analysts and marketing specialists, $37.87 an hour, one pass a week costs about $330 a month in base pay alone. That is more than every entry price on our comparison page, less than the average agency engagement, and the hours come out of someone's other work.
When doing it yourself is enough
One market, a short list of questions, an SEO or content person with spare hours, and nobody outside the team asking for proof. It is also the right way to start. Running your questions by hand for two or three weeks shows you which ones matter before you pay anyone to track them.
Most Teams End Up With a Mix
In practice the routes combine. An agency that runs a tracking tool for you is common; ask whose account it is, because the history leaves with the account. A team doing its own work with software measuring is the cheapest version of the whole job: the tool watches and points, people act. The mix that rarely pays is an agency checking AI answers by hand on your retainer.
For an agency choosing software, our guide to tools for agencies works through the cost per client brand.
Questions to Ask Any Option
The price matters less than what it buys. These seven questions work for a tool, an agency or a freelancer, and the answers are easy to compare side by side.
Questions to ask any GEO option: software, agency or freelancer
1. What is the contract term, and the notice period?
2. If we leave, do we keep the question set and the history?
3. How are answers collected: which AI engines, from which country,
and how (an API with web search, or a logged-in browser)?
4. How often is each question asked, and how many times per run?
5. How do you tell a real change from run-to-run noise?
6. Beyond reporting, who writes, fixes and pitches,
and how many hours a month is that?
7. What does one more brand, market, seat or engine cost? The second question matters most. A question set tracked for a year is the baseline every later change is judged against, and losing it when you switch vendors resets the clock.
Where Ranqo Fits
The software slot, with the whole loop
We built Ranqo for the software slot, priced so a small team can afford all four jobs. Starter is $49 a month for 1 brand and 25 tracked questions on 3 engines, plus 10 page audits, 5 blog posts, 5 page optimizations and 10 outreach drafts a month. That is the second-lowest entry price on our comparison page and the lowest for the whole loop. Pro is $149 for 3 brands, 100 questions and 4 engines.
For agencies, Growth covers 10 client brands for $349 a month, about $35 a brand, and Scale covers 25 for $699, about $28. Both include white-label PDF reports and Excel and CSV exports, so clients get their reports under your agency's name. That is a line item inside an agency retainer, not a replacement for one.
What the whole loop does for you
The work an agency would bill hours for, checking AI answers by hand and writing them up, runs on its own: the same questions asked every week, your pages audited for what AI engines read, the fixes ranked in an Action Center plan, and the content and outreach drafted. Each fix you mark done is re-measured over the runs that follow, so you see whether it moved your visibility. Outreach is drafted for you to send, so the relationships stay yours. For a first look before you pay anything, the free AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, live.
Price the software slot against your own questions
Ranqo tracks your questions every week on the AI engines your plan covers, audits the pages you want cited, turns the gaps into an Action Center plan and drafts the content and outreach to close them. Prices are on the pricing page; competitor prices were last checked in full on 15 October 2026.

Best AI Visibility Tools for Agencies (2026)
An agency does not buy an AI visibility tool the way a brand does. The roster divides every prompt pool, the client sees the report rather than the dashboard, and the margin lives in the price of the whole stack. Six platforms ranked on that arithmetic, the per-client math charted, and five questions no feature grid answers.
