Reddit for AI Visibility: Work the Subreddit, Not the Thread
Only 40.3% of the citations ChatGPT and Perplexity gave Reddit threads went to a thread they cited again; 67.5% of their Reddit citations went to a subreddit they cited again. When the next answer to the same question also cited Reddit, it reused a subreddit 76.7% of the time and a thread 59.7%. What that means for where you post, within Reddit's rules.
To get your brand into the Reddit discussions AI engines cite, pick the few subreddits the engines keep returning to for your buyers' questions and take part in them over time. In our tracking data, only 40.3% of the citations ChatGPT and Perplexity gave to Reddit threads went to a thread they cited again, while 67.5% of their Reddit citations went to a subreddit they cited again.
The engines differ, and it changes the play. When the next answer to the same question also cited Reddit, Perplexity reused a thread it had cited 80.4% of the time, so a thread it already cites is worth a careful reply. ChatGPT reused one 49.3% of the time but stayed in the same subreddit 71.6% of the time, so on ChatGPT the community is what to invest in. This guide covers what we measured, what survives into an answer, three plays, and how to stay inside Reddit's rules.
What We Measured
We took the questions tracked in Ranqo and looked at every Reddit link ChatGPT and Perplexity cited in their answers, on the engines' current models, keeping only answers that cited at least one source. For each company we asked one thing of every cited thread, subreddit, list page and publication: was it cited in one answer, or did the engine come back to it?
| Questions | 898 |
| Answers analysed | 2,256 |
| Citations | 22,778 |
| Reddit citations | 2,640 |
| Window | 2026-07-06 to 2026-10-07 |
What this sample is and is not
Most questions were answered once or twice per engine in the window, about 1.5 times on average, so "cited in one answer" means once in the three months we measured, not never. The companies are the ones tracked in Ranqo, which lean toward software and business services, with an India tilt and little consumer retail. Reddit matters more on ChatGPT than on Perplexity here, at 17.4% of ChatGPT's citations against 8.2% of Perplexity's, in line with our engine-by-engine Reddit post. Check that the engines your buyers use cite Reddit for your questions before you spend time there.
Threads Rotate, Communities Recur
Of the citations that point at a Reddit thread, only 40.3% point at a thread the engine cited again. Measured by subreddit, that becomes 67.5%. Some of that gap is arithmetic: a subreddit is cited again whenever any of its threads is, so it always recurs at least as often as a single thread. The finding is the size of the gap, 27.2 points, and that it is close to the same on both engines: ChatGPT at 39.7% against 66.8%, Perplexity at 41.1% against 68.4%.
How much of each kind of citation lands somewhere the engine cites again
Share of citations going to a unit cited in two or more answers for the same company on the same engine. ChatGPT and Perplexity, current models, grounded answers, July to October 2026.

- Publication behind it
- 65.5% recur69.3% of units cited in one answer
A subreddit recurs whenever any of its threads does, so it always scores at least as high as a thread; the size of the gap is the finding. Citations concentrate on the subreddits and publications the engine returns to.
The same pattern on lists and reviews
Pages typed as ranked lists, comparisons, reviews or alternatives behave the same way. 78.7% of those pages were cited in one answer, and 49.9% of their citations went to a page cited again, against 65.5% for the publication that hosts it. Citations concentrate on publications the engine returns to, which makes the publication a better outreach target than the one article that happened to be retrieved.
The same question, on the next run
A cleaner test holds the question fixed: the same question, on the same engine, answered in two consecutive runs that both cited Reddit. The second answer reused at least one of the same subreddits 76.7% of the time and at least one of the same threads 59.7% of the time.
Ask the same question on the next run: same thread, or same subreddit?
Consecutive runs of one question on one engine where both answers cited Reddit. Share of second answers citing at least one of the same threads, and at least one of the same subreddits.
- ChatGPT
- 71.6% subreddit · 49.3% thread
- Perplexity
- 86.9% subreddit · 80.4% thread
Perplexity holds on to a cited thread far more often than ChatGPT does. On both engines the community is the steadier target.
Perplexity held on to cited threads far more often than ChatGPT. On both engines the community was the steadier of the two, which is why the plays below start from the subreddit and pick the thread inside it.
What Survives Into an AI Answer
A preprint audit of Reddit's own AI answers by researchers at the University of Illinois, run on questions from advice and support communities, found the same rotation from the other side: the most reused 1% of source posts appeared in only 5.1% of answers. A typical answer also drew on about seven communities at once, which is why the shortlist below is several subreddits, not one. Two of its findings are useful when you write, and our own data adds a third.
Visible, top-level answers get picked
In Reddit Answers, selection strongly favoured comments that were already visible and top level: the comments chosen sat at a median score percentile of 0.91, against 0.45 for the ones passed over. The paper did not test how ChatGPT or Perplexity choose comments, but these are also the comments a reader of a cited thread sees first. Answer the question in the title, directly, early in the thread's life.
The personal story gets stripped
First-person singular language fell by 98% in Reddit's answers, 92% for GPT-4o-mini and 72% for GPT-5 when the researchers ran the GPT models with search through the API. What carries over is the substance: the criteria, the trade-off, the point where a tool stopped fitting. Write the experience, and make sure the claim inside it stands on its own.
Your shortlist is a handful of subreddits
For a typical company with at least 20 Reddit citations in our window, those citations spread over about 20 subreddits, and the top three carried 40.3% of them (both figures are medians across companies). Three to five communities where you can be a regular is a workable list; all 20 is not.
Three Plays, and When to Use Each
Each place AI cites suggests its own play. Pick by what the engine is already doing with it.
| Play | Where | What to write | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comment | A thread AI already cited for your question | A top-level answer to the question in the title: what you would choose and why, with the trade-offs. | A link, a pitch, or your brand name when nobody asked for a vendor. |
| Post | A subreddit AI keeps citing for your category | A genuine question or a write-up of something you learned, in the community's own format. | Your brand name, or anything that reads as an announcement. |
| Pitch | The publication behind a ranked list, comparison or review AI cited | A short note to the editor with the facts that would earn an entry, ready to paste. | Asking for a link swap or a paid placement you would not disclose. |
Comment where a thread is already cited
This is the strongest move on Perplexity, which tends to keep citing the same thread. Name your brand only when the thread asks for a recommendation, and say plainly that you work on it when you do.
Post where the community recurs
On ChatGPT, where threads turn over, a good thread of your own in a subreddit the engine keeps reading lasts longer than a reply in last week's thread. It works only if it is useful without your brand in it.
Pitch the publication behind a cited list
When a ranked list or comparison is cited for your question, write to the publication rather than chasing the one article. Our playbook for "best X" lists covers how to qualify the list and write an entry an editor can paste.
How Not to Get Banned
Reddit is tightening enforcement. It said its systems caught 25,000 spammy posts and comments a day in the first quarter of 2026, and that moderators made more than half of removals in the second half of 2025. Its own rules are the guide.
Participate where you have a real interest
Reddit's spam policy asks people to post authentic content into communities where they have a personal interest, and to be thoughtful about how often they post when their contributions are mostly links to a business they benefit from. It leaves the final call to each community's moderators, so read the subreddit's own rules before anything else.
Disclose, and use the tag
When you mention a product you work on, say so in the comment. Reddit also offers a Brand Affiliate tag for posts and comments that are incentivized or have commercial intent.
Say when AI helped
Reddit allows AI-assisted content in general, subject to each community's rules, but its policy on manipulated content rules out AI-generated content that presents itself as written by a person, and asks you to say so, with a tag or another note, when content was generated or modified by AI. Treat any draft as a starting point, put your own experience in it, check the subreddit's rules on AI content, leave out links to your own site, and space your posts in any one community.
How Ranqo Does It
We built Outreach on the same finding. It reads the citations from your tracking runs and turns them into a ranked work queue, with the subreddit as the main unit: a single thread becomes its own target only once AI has cited it twice.
Two channels, three plays
The Reddit channel carries Comment and Post targets; the Publications channel carries Pitch targets, one per cited ranked list, comparison, review or alternatives page. Each target is scored by a fixed formula: how often AI cited it, how many of those answers named a competitor and left you out, how many named no brand at all, how rarely they already name you, how many engines and tracked questions cite it, how recently, and for a publication, what kind of page it is. Your own site and your competitors' sites are never targets.
Drafts written to these rules
Drafts are written to name your brand in a comment only when the thread asks for a vendor, never in a post, and always in a pitch. A draft that names the brand anyway, or more than once, or slips into company voice, shows a warning rather than being rewritten. When a draft names your brand and Ranqo finds no disclosure in it, Ranqo adds one; check that it is there before you post. Links to your own site are removed. Ranqo never posts for you: you edit the draft and post it yourself, under your own account.
Measured in tracking runs
When you mark a target done, the Action Center recommendation it serves moves to Done if it is still Suggested or In Progress, and its measurement window starts. Every Reddit target serves the same Reddit recommendation, so the first one you finish starts the clock. An outreach action gets 4 tracking runs before "no effect" is a fair verdict. Community work is slow, and scores also move between runs for other reasons: our noise data found an overall score moving 14.5 points or more about one run in twenty.
